Yoga is an ancient healing art and science that is designed to create health in the body and the mind. Numerous health studies have shown the benefits of practicing yoga.
Hatha yoga practice was designed to clean and purify the body in order to establish optimal health and prepare one for meditation. Hatha yoga also aims to create a harmonious balance between the masculine and feminine energy. This is the true purpose of Hatha yoga; therefore it is not necessary to be flexible or to strive to achieve complicated Asanas (physical yoga postures) in order to gain the benefits of yoga. Practicing safe and simple Asanas overtime can help to increase strength, endurance, balance and overall flexibility in the body.

“Asana is a steady, comfortable posture”
— The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali

Pranayama, meaning breath control, combines the Sanskrit words Prana, meaning life force, and ayama, meaning extension. Pranayama (breathing exercises) practices help to reduce stress and help to increase the strength and flexibility of the muscles of respiration. By concentrating on slow deep breathing one can calm the nervous system and shift off negative mental habits, which will aid in making clear decisions. Slowly, overtime the layers that block true consciousness are removed. Practicing pranayama is the next step in order to prepare the body and the mind for Meditation.

“Pranayama removes the veil over our inner light”
— The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali

Meditation has an overall calming effect on the nervous system. Engaging in a daily meditation practice helps to clear the mind, creating a sense of expansion and awareness where one can experience a state of well-being and positive change can occur. A simple meditation technique is to sit in a comfortable position with the spine erect and follow the flow of your breath.
