Dance Fitness Method

My Philosophy

I developed my dance fitness method to share my love of dance with all. I wanted to create a dance fitness class that is fun, safe, and results oriented. My class is uniquely designed and utilizes my background in Professional Dance and Exercise Science. The dance exercises draw from classical ballet and jazz dance. I have also incorporated physical therapy exercises into the classes to both treat and prevent injuries. Proper breathing, alignment, safety, technique, and appropriate modifications are emphasized when performing the exercises. Students are encouraged to work slowly and at their own pace with an emphasis on correct technique.

The Class Experience

Alexa Lane Dance Fitness Method is a dance inspired total body workout choreographed to fun, upbeat music to energize your body and mind. The class combines a short dance cardio warm-up, ballet technique, ballet barre work, adagio center floor, core stabilization, strengthening exercises with hand weights, and yoga. The class will strengthen and lengthen all major muscle groups. Proper breathing, alignment, safety, and appropriate modifications are emphasized when performing the exercises. Perfect for all levels, no dance experience required.

For safety and cleanliness, in this class we require socks or ballet/dance shoes (you may provide your own or we sell toesox/grip socks. Class runs 55 minutes in duration.

Key Components of the Method

The key to safe exercise is proper alignment and execution. As mentioned above, my classes incorporate dance science in combination with physical therapy and exercise science. We work in a “neutral spine” position that supports healthy alignment and safety of the spine. Once you lose the alignment of the spine, you are setting yourself up for injury.

Additionally, I do not believe exercise needs to be complicated to be effective. In my dance and barre classes, I teach the exercises in a beginner friendly format. As students progress in execution and strength, we can advance the exercise to make it more challenging. This approach makes my classes accessible to all. Beginners can start with the basics, and advanced students can work with more intensity. Everyone is accommodated in a supportive environment.

As we build upon alignment, I emphasize that students work at their own pace. Yes, it’s true we are moving to the music. However, students may need to move slower than the beat of the music to maintain their alignment. It is much more productive to do five repetitions in excellent alignment than twenty with poor form. Dance to your own beat!

Muscle Strengthening and Endurance

My dance fitness classes will strengthen and tone your entire body and improve your cardiovascular health. To strengthen a muscle you need to apply a certain amount of “overload.” The key is to avoid too much overload and muscle strain. As we build upon alignment and pace, we will add resistance to overload the muscle slowly over time. As we increase the overload, you will feel a “burn” in the muscle. This burn will not bulk your muscles up. A slow and steady approach to strengthening will sculpt your muscles and tone your body, improve your posture, and help you lose inches.

Mind & Body

Mindfulness is a key component to effective exercise. Staying present and tuning into your body will give you the quickest results. When you are fully present and engaged, you will create new neural patterns that lead to positive mental states. In other words, mind/body exercises like dance and barre classes help stimulate positive vibes! You will leave class feeling elevated!
